What are dermal fillers?
As we grow older our facial skin thins, we naturally develop lines and we see a change in our facial structure.
Crow’s feet, smile and forehead lines become more prominent as we lose subcutaneous fat. This is a result of the loss of our natural collagen production (which acts as the main support protein), elastin (which keeps our skin firm) and hyaluronic acid (which helps maintain the volume and shape of our skin).
Dermal fillers are used to replace the loss of these natural elements and help reduce the visible signs of aging. For dermal fillers, Sydney, Miranda, and Sutherland Shire residents can turn to the expertise found at our conveniently located clinic.
Dermal filler procedures (or facial fillers) are injectable substances made up of biocompatible elements. They are carefully injected into or below the skin to restore volume to the area and fill outlines giving you a youthful appearance. Dermal fillers are often used as an alternative to plastic surgery, as a way to boost facial rejuvenation. At Shire Aesthetics And Vein Clinic, we have a range of fillers available which are either temporary or semi-permanent.
Types of dermal fillers
All of our dermal fillers are made up of biocompatible elements that are neither harmful nor toxic to our bodies.
Hyaluronic acid – a naturally produced acid that is found in your skin and cartilage. They generally last between 6-12 months.
Calcium hydroxylapatite – a mineral (a natural substance) found in our bones that usually lasts up to 18 months.
Poly-L-lactic acid – a biodegradable synthetic material that’s often used in other medical products (like dissolvable stitches), that last up to 18 months.

How dermal fillers are performed?
Dermal fillers are carried out using a very fine needle that is inserted into the treatment area. The injection itself takes a few moments per treated area.
What the treatment involves
You may be unaware of how dermal fillers work. So you’ll have an initial consultation to discuss treatment options for your desired outcome. Then the appropriate injection sites for the filler will be determined. The injection sites will then be cleaned with an antibacterial agent and an anaesthetic agent in injectable form or topical cream will be applied to the area.
Should a topical cream be used, it needs to be applied for approximately one hour before treatment with plastic occlusion (cling wrap). Many of the modern facial fillers are premixed with local anaesthetic agents to help reduce discomfort. The injection itself takes a few moments per treated area. Depending on the number of areas treated, the procedure will take between 15 and 60 minutes.
How many dermal fillers injections will I need?
Which dermal filler treatment you desire will determine how many injections you need as the number varies for different treatments. Depending on the treatment you’ll need between 1-6 syringes of filler.
How long does it last?
Most facial fillers last between 6 and 18 months depending on the quantity of filler used, the quality of the skin, and the patient’s lifestyle.
What areas can dermal fillers be used?
Dermal filler treatments can be used for many different areas of the face and serve a number of purposes, not just to create a youthful appearance. Below are the areas they can be used:
- Enhance shallow contours
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
